Alexandria Seaport Foundation Renovation

Alexandria, VA:  M.C. Dean, Inc., the Southeast’s leading design/build integrator of complex power, electronics, and telecommunications systems, recently performed extensive upgrades at the Alexandria Seaport Foundation’s (ASF) riverfront headquarters, donating both time and materials to make improvements.

The ASF renovation was part of ABC 7’s Built on a Dream series.  The program is modeled on the ABC television show, “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition”, and is aimed at providing improvements to facilities operated by local non-profit organizations in the Maryland, Virginia, and DC areas.  ASF received more than $250,000 in goods, services, and donations from area contractors, including M.C. Dean, Inc.  The updated facilities will provide apprentices and volunteers with heated shop space and additional classroom space, drastically improving the efficiency of the program and further integrating the workshop with hands-on learning.

Alexandria Seaport Foundation uses the building of wooden boats to help at-risk youths turn their lives around.  In 1992, the foundation launched its apprenticeship program to give young people a chance to take charge of their lives.  Through the apprentice program, disadvantaged youths from the ages of 17 to 21 develop the self-confidence, discipline, and social skills necessary to find a meaningful place in the regular workforce.

Willy Lizarraga, Operations Manager for M.C. Dean, Inc. said, “I am honored to have been a part of this project.  The Alexandria Seaport Foundation reaches out to young people to improve their lives.  Hopefully these upgrades will allow ASF to help more youths and their families with meaningful educational and recreational experiences.”
